Children are always working on reading, writing, math, science, or social studies
throughout the day.
Our day always starts out with math. In math we work on many standards and skills from the 5 strands of math which include Number Operations, Algebraic Relationships, Geometry, Data Analysis and Measurement.
After math, we have our morning recess and the TLC time for a half hour. TLC stands for Tiered Learning Centers. The children are assigned to a learning center that will either reinforce or enrich skills that they are learning in the classroom.
Next, we have our Whole Group Language Arts time. In our Journey's Reading Program we work on many standards and skills under the main headings of Phonics, Reading Comprehension, Reading Fluency, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Writing.
After that it is time for Recess and Lunch. When we finish lunch, if we don't have our special classes right away, we will work on Science or Social Studies. Science units this year will include: Pebbles, Sand and Silt, Liquids & Solids and Insects. Social Studies units are: Family Ties, Earth, Our Home, A Working World, We the People, Discovering our Past and People, Places and Holidays.
Our special classes each day includes one, two or three of the following classes: Art, Music, Gym, Library, Guidance and PM-TLC.
After our special classes, we have snack and our afternoon recess. Then the last hour of each day is our Small Group Language Arts time. During this time children will read with me in small groups while the rest of the students complete their daily work and work in learning centers. Learning centers may include Reading Counts, Reflex Math, iPad apps, and a variety of other reading and math activities and opportunities.
Our day goes by very quickly!
